Whatcom Hoops Boys Top 30: #4 Gunnar Dykstra

In another amazing season filled with outstanding players, Whatcom Hoops is ranking the top 30 boys. Each day we’ll feature an outstanding player in our county and count down until we get to #1. So join us daily as we honor the best of the best.

#4

Gunnar Dykstra, junior, Lynden Christian

WHY HE’S #4: The latest in the Dykstra dynasty to help the Lyncs win a Class 1A state title, the smooth 6-foot forward was a deadly shooter especially from beyond — and often well beyond — the 3-point arc. He averaged 18 points a game and his 72  3-pointers were by far the most in Whatcom County. But Gunnar was more than a gunner, averaging more than 4 assists and 3 rebounds and almost 2 steals a game. He was named to VarsityWA’s 1A all-state first team, the media’s and Eli Sports Network’s all-state tournament first team, and the all-Northwest Conference first team.

COACH TIM ZYLSTRA: “Gunnar is one of the top shooters in the state but has gotten better at his defense and become a well-rounded player. He’s a smart player who sees the floor really well, can change speeds, and finds his teammates when they’re open. He’s someone I can put trust in to make the right decisions because he studies the game and is a basketball junkie. He does everything we ask and more. He’s a Dykstra; they don’t take plays off or days off. They work at it.”
