Whatcom Hoops Boys Top 30: #2 Jerome Toby

In another amazing season filled with outstanding players, Whatcom Hoops is ranking the top 30 boys. Each day we’ll feature an outstanding player in our county and count down until we get to #1. So join us daily as we honor the best of the best.

#2

Jerome Toby Jr., senior, Lummi Nation

WHY HE’S #2: The 5-foot-8 dynamo showed why he was one of the best point guards in the state regardless of classification, averaging almost 18 points a game while shooting 50 percent from the field and 78 percent from the line, in addition to collecting 6 assists, 4 rebounds, and 4 steals a game. But his worth went far beyond numbers as his unselfish playmaking, calm confidence in the clutch, and ability to take over a game on offense or defense were what drove the Blackhawks to repeat as Class 1B state champions. He was named the Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association  player (senior) of the year and was chosen to play in the WIBCA all-state game, was VarsityWA’s 1B player of the year, Eli Sports Network’s 1B all-state tournament MVP, and the Northwest 1B League player of the year. Oh yeah, and he broke the school record for career points.

COACH JEROME TOBY SR.: “Jerome has had a great high school career while at Lummi Nation. After five great seasons playing point guard for Blackhawks, he leaves as the school’s all-time leading scorer, steals, three-time league MVP,  and two-time state champion and player of the year. More importantly than his stats and accolades is his leadership of our program. He was our team captain for four seasons and floor general.  He concluded his career helping lead the boys to back-to-back state championships.”

NOTE: Thank you to the coaches and to Tyler Anderson of WhatcomPreps.com for season stats.
