In a season filled with outstanding players, Whatcom Hoops ranked the top 30 girls. Each day we featured an amazing player in our county and counted down until we got to #1. We hope you enjoyed the countdown as we honored the best of the best.
#12
Tana Hoekema, junior, Nooksack Valley
WHY SHE’S #12: Over the season, Hoekema went from being a role player to an all-star, and a case could be made the Pioneers wouldn’t have won state without her. The 6-foot post put up solid numbers all season, averaging 7.3 points, 7 rebounds, nearly 2 assists, and 1 block a game. But her relentless rebounding in big games and her shooting touch (she made 32 percent of her 3-pointers and 70 percent of her free throws) made her invaluable on both offense and defense and would earn her a place on the all-state tournament second team as well as the all-Northwest Conference’s second team.
COACH SHANE WICHERS: “Tana has the rare ability to play around the rim and to step out and hit 3’s. For being 6 feet tall this is a bit uncommon. She averaged about 10 rebounds a game at state and became a fierce offensive/defensive rebounder for us.”
