Chayce Waite-Kellar, senior, Lummi Nation
WHY HE’S #6: A gentle giant off the court, no one was fiercer around the rim than the powerful 6-foot-8 center. His transfer to Lummi Nation made the veteran Blackhawks favorites to repeat as Class 1B state champs and they did not disappoint thanks to Waite-Kellar’s steady 16 points, 12 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 blocks a game while shooting an amazing 70 percent from the field. No doubt the county’s dunk leader, the Central Washington University commit was chosen to play in the Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association all-state game and was a first-team all-Northwest 1B League pick.
COACH JEROME TOBY SR.: “The Big Fella was our defensive anchor this past season, leading the league in rebounds and blocks. His presence in the middle allowed our guards to play aggressively knowing we had a rim protector in the paint. Chayce’s impact at LNS was felt immediately not only with his skill and athleticism but with his unselfish play. He made the game a lot easier for his teammates. He was a big factor in our repeating as state champs.”
