What is www.whatcomhoops.com? And why do we need it?
The first question is easy to answer. It is a website devoted to Whatcom County high school basketball.
On it you will find stories, pictures and videos chronicling the players, coaches, teams, games and seasons that have made our county famous for its high school hoops. There will be looks back into the historic past, recognition of present accomplishments, and analysis of the promising future.
If you love watching boys and girls high school basketball, you’ll love www.whatcomhoops.com.
But the second question — why do we need a website like this — is a little more complicated and, to be honest, a little sad for many of us.
The famous Greek philosopher Aristotle said that nature abhors a vacuum — and it turns out that fans of Whatcom County high school basketball are the same way.
With the recent decisions by local media — and especially the Bellingham Herald — to cease regular coverage of high school sports, there is little and often no publicity for local teams.
For example: The state championships won by the Lynden boys basketball team and the Lynden Christian boys and girls basketball teams last March — on what was perhaps the greatest day in the history of Whatcom County sports — were not recognized by the Herald.
There was a vacuum that sports fans — and especially high school basketball fans — abhorred. And it needed to be filled.
Thus was born www.whatcomhoops.com.
I look forward to hearing your comments and your suggestions on how we can celebrate and remember those who have given us so much joy over the years. So keep visiting www.whatcomhoops.com as we enjoy Whatcom hoops together.
