Whatcom County boys and girls are ready to tip off the 2019-20 basketball season, and Whatcom Hoops has previews for all our teams. Today: Sehome

BOYS

Coach: Skyler Gillispie

Last season: 15-9 overall, 8-5 in NWC (fifth)

Top newcomers: Nick MacPhee (Sr.), Elliot Tanovan (Jr.), Micah Daheim (Jr.)

Outlook: No NWC team was hit as hard by graduation as the Mariners, who lost their 10 top scorers. With three games in four days to open the season and a difficult non-league schedule, Sehome will need to grow together quickly.

Coach’s quote: “This group is extremely hard working and willing to take on the challenge of replacing 10 seniors from last year. Considering the steep learning curve, we hope to continue to grow and play our best basketball by the end of the season.”

Junior Aspen Garrison

GIRLS

Coach: Anye Turner

Last season: 7-14 overall, 2-11 in NWC (tied for 12th)

Top returnees: Aspen Garrison (Jr.), Mikayla Wefer (Sr.), Jessica Melvin (Sr.), Ava Collins  (So.), Ava Lunny (So.), Madeline Schumacher (So.), Taylor Brooks (Sr.)

Top newcomers: Frannie Fleming (Sr.), Jessica DeYoung (So.)

Outlook: Despite losing five seniors, the Mariners will be experienced but young with several sophomores expected to see a lot of playing time. Sehome will be led by 6-foot-2 Garrison, a second-team all-NWC pick, and with 6-foot Wefer also playing post, the Mariners will have one of the more dominant inside games in the conference.

Coach’s quote: “We’ll have a lot of determined youth hoping to compete every game.”
