The Ferndale and Lynden girls basketball teams had little trouble in their respective district openers Friday night, Feb. 14, but Sehome will have to battle back through the consolation bracket after losing its district contest.
The Golden Eagles defeated Edmonds-Woodway, 66-53 in the quarterfinal round of the Class 3A District 1 tournament. The victory puts Ferndale in the semifinals against second-seed Arlington on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Mariner High School in Everett. The winner will earn a berth in the regional round of the state tournament.
The top-seed Lions crushed Anacortes, 59-33, in the quarterfinal round of the Class 2A District 1/2 tournament. The victory puts Lynden in the semifinals against Archbishop Murphy on Monday at 7:30 p.m. at Mount Vernon High School. The winner will earn a berth in the regional round of the state tournament.
Archbishop Murphy advanced by beating Sehome, 56-42, on Friday in their quarterfinal matchup. The Mariners will play a loser-out contest against Anacortes on Monday at 7:30 p.m. at Mount Vernon Christian.
3A: Golden Eagles Fly Away From Edmonds-Woodway
Third-seed Ferndale (15-5) used its running game and pressing defense to pull away in the third quarter and avenge an earlier loss to sixth-seed Edmonds-Woodway (11-9), which beat Ferndale by seven on Dec. 21.
Junior guard Jamie Johnson led the balanced Golden Eagles attack with 16 points. Senior guard Breanna Byrnes added 15, and junior guards Josie Cline and Jaclyn Denham had 10 and 9, respectively.
The Golden Eagles held the Warriors to nine points in the third period in building a double-digit lead.

2A: Lions Leap To Early Lead, Down Anacortes
Top-seed Lynden (19-1) didn’t take long to shake off the rust after not playing for seven days. The Lions exploded for 24 points in the first quarter and a 40-14 lead at the break to dispatch eighth-seed Anacortes (8-13).
Keylie Hershey led the Lions with 14 points and four 3-pointers; Faith Baar had 11 points and a team-high 5 rebounds; Ruby VanderHaak had 10 points and a pair of 3-pointers; and Liv Tjoelker had 9 points and team-highs with 6 steals and 6 assists.

2A: Mariners Battle, But Lose To Archbishop Murphy
Fifth-seed Sehome (14-7) rallied to within six points with three minutes to go, but could get no closer as the Mariners lost to fourth-seed Archbishop Murphy (12-8).
Sophomore wing Ava Lunny led the Mariners with 12 points, senior post Mikayla Wefer scored 11 points inside, sophomore guard Ava Collins added 8 points and junior guard Kaylee Wilson had 6 points.
Sehome played without its leading scorer and rebounder, Aspen Garrison, who suffered a sprained ankle in the Mariners’ opening-round game Wednesday.
“It was a good battle all game,” said Sehome coach Anye Turner. “A lot of players stepped up. Ava Lunny, Mikayla Wefer and Ava Collins were huge offensively. I’m proud of our effort and resiliency.”
