3A District: Ferndale Girls Still Alive, Squalicum Boys Done

The Ferndale girls bounced back from a disappointing first-round loss in the Class 3A District 1 tournament, but the Squalicum boys couldn’t do the same.

Playing at home, the Golden Eagles defeated Stanwood, 64-56, Friday in the consolation bracket to keep their state hopes alive. Ferndale had fallen into the losers’ bracket by losing to Snohomish on Thursday. Stanwood finishes the year at 10-11.

Ferndale (15-7) now only needs to win one more game to qualify for state, Saturday’s consolation semifinal against Edmonds-Woodway (12-9) at Everett Community College.

But they’ll need to be ready bright and early … tip off is 11 a.m. Edmonds-Woodway lost to top-seeded Arlington in Friday’s semifinals.

The winner of Saturday’s game will qualify for the state regionals, which begin next Friday and Saturday, Feb. 22 and 23. The season is over for the loser.

Either way, the district tournament will be over for Ferndale. Because of all the weather-related postponements, the consolation final to decide third and fourth place was canceled. Seeding for the regionals will be done strictly by the state’s RPI rating system.

For the Squalicum boys, the Cinderella season that saw them finish the regular season with four straight wins to slip into the playoffs as the 10th and final seed, and then notch a play-in win to advance to the quarterfinals of the 3A District 1 tournament, is now over.

The Storm came up short Friday night, losing to Shorewood of Shoreline, 52-45, on the road to finish its season at 9-14. Squalicum had fallen into the losers’ bracket with a loss Thursday to second-seeded Arlington.

Shorewood (7-13) advances to the winner-to-state, loser-out consolation semifinal against Stanwood on Saturday.
