3A District: Cold Start Sends Ferndale Girls Into Consolation Bracket

The Ferndale girls basketball team came out as cold as the ride to Snohomish, and it cost the Golden Eagles as they fell to the Panthers, 47-34, Wednesday afternoon in the first round of the Class 3A District 1 tournament.

Brianna Byrnes’ two buckets were the only field goals for the Golden Eagles in the first quarter as they fell behind, 17-6, and never recovered. Byrnes finished with nine points, and Kim Weden led Ferndale with 11.

“We played them even after that,” said Ferndale coach Mike Ivy of the Golden Eagles’ cold first period.

The sixth-seeded Golden Eagles (14-7) now drop into the consolation round of the double-elimination tournament.

They will play seventh-seeded Stanwood in a loser-out contest Friday at 7 p.m. at Ferndale. Stanwood (10-10) lost to Shorecrest on Wednesday.

To make it to the state tournament, Ferndale will have to win Friday and then win another loser-out contest on Saturday. That game is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Everett Community College, but, of course, things could easily change before then.

Snohomish (13-7) will play Shorecrest (18-2) on Friday in one of the semifinals.
